After spending time ashore recovering its strength, the penguin returned to the Atlantic Ocean. Each austral winter, juvenile Magellanic penguins migrate north from breeding colonies in Patagonia, southern Chile, and the Falkland Islands, following cold ocean currents and schools of fish. Many travel more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), and some reach the coast of southeastern Brazil before returning south as ocean conditions change.
